The Microscope  Microscopes are super-neat. The fact that after they were invented in the 17 th  century resulted in  a huge shift public understanding of the sciences. Remember, this was a time dominated by the  faith-based church and deductive, empirical reasoning in biological inquiry was nascent. For the  first time, people were able to see a world that was hereto completely hidden and accessible only  via inference. This gave a lot of public support to the notion of science as a discipline, and helped  speed up technological advances for centuries to come.  I will not repeat the information from the handout, however, there are a few points that need to be  made crystal clear.  Magnification  is how large something appears. The units are always ‘times’ (x). That is to say,  a microscope can make something appear two ‘times’ as large, ten ‘times’ as large or 1000  ‘times’ as large. Warning: This is a simple concept, sometimes so simple that it messes people  up.  Magnification is not the same as resolution. Resolution  is how far apart two points are, or how  small two points are that can be distinguished as two points. This is, obviously, the same thing. It
