Globalization A Working Definition A process of interaction and integration among the people, companies, and governments of different nations (WHAT IS THE PROCESS) A process driven by international trade and investment and aided by information technology (WHAT ARE THE CAUSES OF IT) Has effects on the environment, culture, political systems, economic development and prosperity, and human physical well being in societies around the world (WHAT ARE THE EFFECTS OF IT) The 3 Ps: Phenomenon, Philosophy, Process Phenomenon- manifests the extremely intricate interconnectedness of human life across the planet. While this is not new, its awareness, reach, and immediate implications are striking. Philosophy (globalism)- The world is rapidly integrating in all spheres. Peoples’ economic, political and cultural expectations are converging. Process- seeks to eliminate political and geographical distances between peoples is what makes globalization active process comes from phenomenon Aspects of Globalization Technological- the invention and technologies of transportation and communication which have drawn all parts of the world closer together transportation- how we get to each other communication- how we talk to each other Economic- the growth of an international trading system linking finance, production, distribution, and consumption of goods and services on a global basis drives globalization Social- the movement of peoples and changes in social organization refugees what it means to be a family Spatial- the influence of the above on the structure and layout of cities, the design of housing and the nature of working environments how we work, how our working space looks Cultural- the impact of the above developments on lifestyle, including such elements as dress, food, language, and entertainment Biological- changes in natural habitats, living organisms domestic and wild, the spread of disease agents, and human beings themselves, their bodies, their diets, and their health farming and forestry what we eat, how we eat it, what’s available to us History of Global Processes Globalization is not new—there have always been people and corporations that have traded and
