© 2010, Laureate Higher Education Group, Inc. 1 This is the introduction to the course, “CMIS 1002: Information Technology Infrastructure.” This is CMIS 1002: Information Technology Infrastructure. You should know already how information systems provide competitive advantage to the business organization. Recall that an information system (IS) is “any organized combination of people, hardware, software, communications networks, data resources, and policies and procedures that stores, retrieves, transforms, and disseminates information in an organization” Our definition of IS does not require a computer, but its speed, reliability, and accuracy have made information technology (IT) attractive and commonplace. All but the smallest modern businesses now depend heavily on IT. Many critical functions, such as ordering and sales, inventory management, and payroll, become problematic if “the system goes down.” In this course, you will learn about the main technologies in an automated information system. These are: the physical hardware of the computer; the software that directs it; the data that the system stores and manages; and the communication networks that allow many users to share that data. You will also explore ways in which IS and IT affect managers and executives, including systems to improve decision-making, the ethics of IT, and how to keep valuable corporate assets secure. You will read case studies and hear first-hand from professionals who ensure that IT serves the needs of the organization.
