Goode There is a fit between the conjugal (nuclear) family and modern industrial economy The nuclear family is the appropriate family to a economically developed system Characteristics of this family Emphasis on nuclear family as normal residential unit Monogamy Free choice of marriage partner Egalitarianism (some sort of equality) in spousal relations Provision for divorce Absence of clan or lineage structures to interfere in the household Why are they related? Nuclear family facilitated geographic mobility and class mobility 1 Smaller families are better and easier to move It also encouraged achievement orientation 1 Encouraged working hard to get job, make money, start family, get out of parents house Fewer opportunities for nepotism Industrialization will cause other family systems to become like the conjugal type Is it true?
