ECE 4370 – Fiber and Integrated Optics Homework Assignment #4 Due: Tuesday, March 4th, 2010 at 5:00pm 1. Consider a planar slab waveguide of infinite extent in the y and z directions. The guiding film index is 1.5, the substrate index is 1.48, and the cover index is 1.33. The thickness is h = 2.1 µ m. The waveguide is excited with a 1.33 µ m source. Using Figure 3.15 and normalized parameters, determine: a. Number of TE modes supported. b. Allowed values of β . 2. Consider a symmetric planar slab waveguide of infinite extent in the y and z directions. The guiding film index is 1.5 and the substrate index is 1.48. The thickness is h =5.5 µ m, and the waveguide is excited with a 1.4 µ m source. Using Figure 3.15 and normalized parameters, determine: a. Number of TE modes supported. b. Allowed values of β and the corresponding effective indices. c. Now assume the waveguide is asymmetric with an asymmetry coefficient of a=10. Determine the allowed values of β and the corresponding effective indices.
