Fordism Shift from “Fordism” to “Lean Manufacturing” or “Flexible Mass production” Ford: From Henry Ford, assembly line, introduced mass production on large scale. Assembly line Mass production and mass consumption: did not revolutionize it, but interchangeable parts especially in the gun manufacturing, produced machine tool s that would make identical parts. Revolutionized manufacturing, automobile perfected and gathered all the elements of production in one place, raw materials, parts supplies. Greater managerial hierarchy (Visible Hand) Give them the earnings to let them buy what they made. Much higher than prevailing wages at the time (paid them well) and felt needed to keep people on the line, immigrants and blacks from south , realized if have mass production need mass consumption, more people consume the more costs come down. Linked to Keynesianism: linked to Keynesian policies of demand management and full employment Labor-capital accommodation: union demand focused on wages not control over work, unions became junior partner in prosperity, unionization 2.
