Gabi Drusinsky, 994727868 1/22/10 Reading Assignment #2 Unity of Life When someone has to uses a large bill to make a purchase, they get change back – otherwise they would lose money every day and it would be pointless to use those bills. In ATP, the bond energies are such that if you harvest one, you don’t get any fraction of the energy back, even if you only needed to spend a part of it. Chemiosmosis, however, introduces the ability to use fractions with the use of a gradient. A gradient is built up step by step until there is enough energy to synthesize a single ATP – it saves up “change” instead of spending the whole dollar just to make a dollar. By doing this, chemiosmosis becomes a nice tie between respiration and photosynthesis – two processes which seem fairly unrelated. Looking from a broad point of view, respiration generates energy with the use of proton pumps, generating the proton-motive force, which drives the ATP synthase to make ATP.
