Mental Illness through the Ages LECTURE 2 What is a psychological disorder? - The 4 D’s o Deviance (atypical   most people don’t) o Distress (they cause the individual or other individuals in the people’s lives distress) o Dysfunction (getting in the way of their life) o Dangerous (does harm to the person or to others) - These things change based on the times o XX: being gay used to be a mental illness, now it’s not - You don’t need to have all of the 4 D’s o XX: pedophilia   deviant, but doesn’t necessarily cause the individual distress Mental Illness through the Ages - Mental people used to be thought about as something to do with supernatural o Demons and Devils Trephining Exorcism   treatment which coaxes the evil spirits to leave - Intellectual Turn - Greek and Roman Views and Treatment o Four Humors Yellow bile   excess would cause mania
