Gabi Drusinsky MUS 129D Assignment 1 – Timothy Rice, “The Music of Europe” Folk music : Music of the peasants in rural areas. This type of music is very traditional in its respective community,  and is passed around verbally. It is not common for this type of music to be officially recorded. Classical music : sometimes called “Art Music.” Unlike folk music, classical music is most often recorded in written  form. This type of music is more associated with urban and educated cities, and is considered the most prestigious  type of music within the three categories of European music that we are studying. It is often “label[ed] the work of  supposed geniuses” (Rice 3). Popular music : urban music, music of the working/middle classes, passed through electronic media  Popular music: music of the urban cities, where it is most listened to by the middle and working classes. Although
