Gabi Drusinsky 994727868 Music 129D, Exam II Essay 11/07/09 Gateway to the World One often hears the word  gateway  as a point that connects one network to another. It is  also sometimes used to portray a small act which inevitably leads to a larger one, such as in the  case of the Romani people. Their culture has been able to cross boundaries of every genre,  connecting with the vast majority of the world today through music, all due to a handful of  people taking that first step. These people were their gateways – leading the way for the rest to  someday follow. One by one, Roma have been able to connect with people all over the globe with  their music, stretching the limits of gender norms, cultural differences, musical styles, political  stance, and language boundaries. Although the Romani people have been around for centuries, it was not until fairly  recently that a woman by the name of Esma Redžepova managed to work her way around the  stereotypical   image   and   disrespect   that   accompanies   a   female   singer.   Typically,   females  performed in low budget venues, wearing traditional yet minimal clothing; no matter how much  talent they had, being female and being Romani worked doubly against them. However, with the  help of her husband, Stevo Teodosievski, Esma worked to create an image wholly separate from
