1) Nueva Concion  a. “New Song” 2) Origins of nationalism: Peru a. President Leguía proclaims June 24  Dia del Indio  in Peru, 1921 b. Leguía sponsors a “folklore” contest for “vernacular” (i.e., highland) artists, 1927. First major  public display of highland music in Lima, and 50,000 attend. Winners: a trio from Cusco  performing  waynos  and other dances with 2  kenas  and piano.  3) In 1928 Leguía says: a. Nothing better reflects the collective psychology as the music of the people…. In  our   Inca  music exists the race and imperial power, the tragedy of the [Spanish] conquest…and the  richness of an overflowing glory after this unfortunate event… The  vernacular  artists that  have come from all corners of the country to take part in this event attest to the marvels of  our  folklore.   published in the Lima newspaper  La Cronica,
