3.9.10 Men do fancy dance - Fancy dance   most athletic, high point of the contest powwow o Very colorful, has most different parts of all the regalia o Prizes tends to be highest for the fancy dance Jingle Dances - Usually the first woman dance of the powwow - Jingling of the jingle ornaments move with the music - Regalia o Roach = head-piece o Every part of the regalia needs to move with the beat Video - Old people called it the crazy dance - The fancy dance   now the symbol of the contemporary powwow - Fancy dance began in the early 1920’s - Contest powwow dances don’t exist in isolation to what exists in outside “white” culture o These were happening at the same time that tango was coming to NY, at the same time jazz  was getting popular - In the late 1800’s Buffalo Bill would have those shows - 1940’s-1970’s, women dress and compete in the same contests
