1) Quilapayun   Formed in Chile, 1965 2) Early years a. Their name comes from the Mapuche language:  quila - payún  ‘the three bearded men’  (originally a folk music trio) b. Their first artistic director:  Ángel Parra   c. In 1966 another member joined and they attracted attention for always performing in black  ponchos. d. Started winning festivals. In 1966,  Víctor Jara  replaces Parra as artistic director (till 1969).   e. The group recorded several albums of Andean music, toured internationally, and then signed  with  La Jota,  the record label of Chile’s Communist Youth Organization. This venture gave  birth to the  Discoteca del Cantar Popular  (DICAP), the record label that became the  centerpiece of the  nueva canción  movement. 3) Cantata Santa Maria de Iquique a.
