Blackwater 2 Overview of PSC Use Private Security Companies otherwise known as (PSCs), are companies that provide private security support services to the United States and other governments around the world. PSCs have played valuable roles in many recent and previous wars. The earliest know participation from the PSCs was back in the end of the Cold War. PSCs play vital roles which include the privatization of defense, security, and peacekeeping and reconstruction. These types of companies are very proficient in elevating and upholding all levels of security in unbalanced but economically vital locations around globe. Private Security Contractors like Xe formerly known as Black Water, were utilized in the Iraq war. Black Water provided security for convoys, provided personnel protection of key individuals, forwarded operating bases and other infrastructures, as well as helped train the Iraqi police and military personal. Black Waters mission as well as all the other private contractors was to supply a vital service to the US and the intercontinental efforts to aid in bringing harmony to Iraq. However, the use of private armed contractors did raise some concerns when it came time to being transparent and having some kind of accountability. There was limited information on who Black Water was and how much they were getting paid. Other questions arrived such as, how long they were going to have their contract, type of training did they receive, and what standards or government practices was Black Water adhering to. The PSCs including Black Water had an obvious lack of accountability which made it hard to enforce the laws that were set forth that pertained to contractors engaging in war activities in a foreign country. 2

Blackwater 3 Black Water otherwise known as the “Shadow Army,” was formed in 1996 by two men named Erick Prince, and Al Clark.
