EE 314 Course Notes 1) What is communication? Communication is the process if transforming information from one location to another. Comunication Systems transfer information electronically over commnication channels Channel Types: voice, text, image, video, digital data Communication Systems: PSTN, Cellular Phones, bluetooth, internet, radio/TV broadcasting A signal is a set of information or data, and mathematically represented by a funtion of time. A system is a combination of devices and networks to perform a desired operation on signals. 2) Communication System Block Diagram Input Message : humain voice, picture, data … Input Transducer : microphone, camera, keyboard The input signal is a baseband signal, that is, it contains energy about DC (f = 0) Transmitter : A/D converter, encoder, modulator Receiver : D/A convert, decoder, demodulator *GOAL* The goal of any communication system is to receive original information at the receiver with the highest possible fidelity.
