Chapter 6 Study guide What did the American version of republicanism combine? It combined a New Whig distrust of central authority with a belief in a government rooted in the public spirit of a virtuous citizenry. Who were the Loyalists? Most were farmers, officeholder, and professionals. They came from all social classes. They believed they had something to lose, including their honor, if broke off with Britain, and accounted for 20% of the colonial population. What was the Conciliatory Proposition and why did the colonists not accept it? It pledged not to tax the colonists if they voluntarily contribute to the defense of the empire. British officials, however, would decide what a sufficient contribution was. They rejected it because it was offered too late. It signaled the start of the American Revolution and helped inspired the French Revolution in 1789 and other revolutions in Europe and Latin America. Why did the Continental Congress issue the Olive Branch Petition? America denied Parliament’s claim to govern the colonies, but they were not yet ready to declare themselves independent, so they expressed their loyalty to England in the petition. Why was George Washington selected as commander of the Continental Army? Because he was from Virginia, and also expected his leadership to help attract recruits from Virginia, the most populous colony. Despite his experience in the French and Indian War, Washington felt inadequate for the task, but still took the position. What was the significance of the Battle of Breed’s Hill? Because even though, the British succeeded, it came at a cost of 1,000 men of the 2,200 fighting. What was the significance of “Common Sense?”
