New Solutions to Old Problems The Components of the IR -Transportation Revolution -All of the states build roads, canals, and railroads using tax money -Both a public and private function -Water transport is best so they build their own river -Most successful is the Erie Canal (Started in 1817, finished in 1825) -Canals are almost always public -Drastically reduced amount of time to travel, and cost -Railroads are usually private ventures -Railroads are expensive -Most states subsidize in form of tax Communication Revolution -Telegraph was invented in 1884 by Samuel Morse -Problem is it is only one way, and there is no voice so have to make new language -Problem Is not everyone learns morse code -Alexander Graham Bell invents telephone -Better because there is voice and it is 2 way Energy Revolution -Need a better power source -Water power is the best kind of power -Steam, electricity -James Watt perfected steam engine --Steam Engine is more powerful, can drive more machinery -Increases productivity -After Civil War, invented electric powered things
