From Sea to Shining Sea Texas Spanish Background -Not enough Spanish settlers in Mexico to have control of all their land. Tejas y Gringos -The northern territory was mostly inhabited by Native Americans. -Spanish wanted a boundary between them and America. -Wanted United States to establish it for them. -Moses Austin wanted to settle it for them in return for land. -His son, Stephen F. Austin asks for the same deal, and is approved. -Government gives 4,000 acres to each person that settles. -However, they must: -Become Mexican citizens -Must convert to Roman Catholics -Must not bring slaves. -Americans agreed but did not follow guidelines. -5,000 Americans come to Mexico and outnumber Mexicans 4:1/ -Mexican government becomes very worried about this. -In 1830, there were 20,000 Americans, 3,000 slaves, Mexican government does not like this and close borders, outnumber Mexicans 16:1 Independence -Santa Anna becomes President of Mexico, and declares himself dictator of Mexico. Santa Anna uses army to put down revolts in Mexico.
