2 A wise woman once said to me that if one listens with eyes wide open and a mind unshackled from judgment or fear, only then, one could hear the whimpers of those in need. These words were my beloved grandmother gentle way of teaching me little life lessons about the art of active listening and empathy. I was reminded of her words while listening to Monday’s class discussion about the role of paraprofessionals and was once again shaken by the impact of the meaning behind my grandmother’s parable. In fact, I remembered thinking if I would measure up as a good example of an empathetic active listener. While there was no doubt, at least in my mind, that empathy is an important component of the care giving and developing long lasting relationships, I was unsure of my own skills as a paraprofessional. Indeed, I was convinced that the easiest way leading to effective care is the ability to understand one’s verbal and emotional behaviors and the attitude of comprehending another person’s feelings, emotions and perspective taking. Thus, I had no hesitation in concluding that an individual who is able to demonstrate empathy is more likely to be an effective listener since such an individual would have the ability to make a conscious effort to
