2 and compassion, and to discover my own abilities for empathy. One thing that helps the residents to find that voice is the knowledge that somebody cares. Many of the residents have trouble remembering recent events and difficulty performing familiar tasks. In fact, I have personally observed several residents displaying incidents of confusion, personality and behavior changes, impaired judgment, and difficulty finding words, finishing thoughts or following directions. Although each case is different and how quickly these changes occur will vary from person to person, nevertheless, Alzheimer’s eventually will leave a person totally unable to care for himself or herself. As a volunteer, I realize that the day for the residents at Air Force Village West who suffer from Alzheimer's or dementia is often filled with boredom, obstacles, mistakes and failures resulting from memory lapses. Therefore, I spend most of my time providing fun games and activities such as Word Find Games that involve hunting, comparing, spelling and logic. In
