Please note that the oldest trick in the book is to write so messily, and work in such an illogical order, that perhaps the prof won’t notice that you don’t know what you’re doing. Problem 1) For the shaft shown the torque on the bar at B is T kip feet, and T/2 kip feet at C. The bar is hollow, with an OD = 4 inches, an A B a C E ID = 3.5 inches, E = 20,000 ksi and G = 8,000 ksi. in The length of the bar from A to B is 4 feet, from B to C is 6 feet, and from C to E is 5 feet. If the maximum shearing stress is not to exceed 40 ksi, and the total rotation at the end of the bar must not U \f exceed 10 degrees, what is the maximum value of T kip feet permitted? Problem 2) The concrete column shown to the left is reinforced with several steel bars. The load applied to the column is 300 kips. Econcrete = 4,500 ksi, and Esteel = 29,000 ksi. There are 8 solid steel bars with diameters of 1.5 inches, and the column has an outside diameter of 10 inches. Determine the stress in the steel bars. Problem 3) Draw a shear A, Ffir and moment diagram for the beam shown to the right. The uniform load is 2 k/ft, the concentrated load is 20 kips. Problem 4) For the 20 foot long bar shown below, determine at what temperature the stress in the steel will reach 30 ksi. The bar was installed at a temperature of 70 degrees F, at which time the bar was exactly 0.1 inch shorter than the distance between the walls (i.e. there was a 0.1” gap between the end of the bar and the wall).
