Axia College Material Appendix F Mary’s Battle Directions: Base your answers for this week’s CheckPoint on this case study. Mary is a 42-year-old African-American female. Five of her six siblings are still living. When she was a child, her oldest sibling was killed along with her parents in a tragic car accident. She still does not talk about this catastrophic event. Her other siblings are scattered around the U.S., but stay in touch with one another and get together for the holidays. Mary is divorced, and her two children are attending college away from home. Her ex-husband lives in the same town, and has remarried. She has worked as a full-time medical transcriptionist for the past 15 years. Mary’s employer provides her with excellent health insurance benefits. In 2001, Mary was diagnosed with ductal breast carcinoma. She underwent a mastectomy and reconstructive surgery, followed by chemotherapy. She was declared cancer-free in 2002. Last year, she had a recurrence of breast cancer in her other breast.
