Steven L. Coburn Paul R. Williams Rapid Viz. Paul R. Williams (02-18, 1894) overcame many elements including, being an orphan at age four. With little to no support to achieve his goals he still managed to enroll at USC (California) , while attending college Williams finished first in an sought after architecture competition. He won the competition when he was 25 and by 28 he was opening the doors to his own firm. With the racial turbulence of his times among the stemming social issues at the forefront, Mr. Williams provided his services to a mostly white customer base. A quote from American Magazine “ In the moment they (white people) met me and discovered were dealing with a Negro, I could see many of them freeze”. Later in the same article he was again quoted saying “My success during those first few years was founded largely upon my willingness – anxiety would be a better word – to accept commissions which were too small by other more favored architects.” Things of these sorts we the driving force for Williams to sharpen his salesman skills, meanwhile he joined the Los Angeles Planning Commission and later became the
