The rover is equipped with video cameras and a microphone and is lucky enough to observe what appears to be mating between two animals of the same species. The Martian male is an octopus-like creature with huge glowing blue spots that pulsate at a frequency of 10 Hz. These males create burrows in the ice and congregate in areas where the ice is not too thick or too thin. Females are attracted to the males and seem to choose the male with the biggest and brightest blue spots. Please assume that these Martian organisms evolved through Natural Selection and apply Tinbergen's 4 laws to explain the following question. Why do they males have flashing blue spots? You must correctly place your answers in the categories of Proximate and Ultimate questions. Each type of question has a specific term associated with it. Please fill in the correct term in the blanks provided.
