FIRST YEAR PHYSICS FIRST YEAR PHYSICS PHYS141 LECTURER: Dr. Carey Freeth Rm 4.110 Ph. 02 42214798 Email: carey_freeth@uow.edu.au Physics The Science of Measurement and Theory Physics attempts to describe the fundamental nature of the universe and gives us an understanding of the world around us. Physics is an experimental science and connects experimental observations to theoretical descriptions of nature. This connection is made from quantitative measurements and a through understanding of physical theories and is dependent on knowing how the measurements are made and how accurate and reliable the measured information is.

Reading Assignment Week 1. Young & Freedman 12th Edition SYSTEMS OF MEASUREMENTS 1.1 The nature of Physics 1.2 Solving Physics Problems 1.3 Standards & Units 1.4 Unit Consistency and Conversions 1.5 Uncertainty and Significant Figures 1.6 Estimates and Order of Magnitudes The study of motion lays the foundation for an analysis and understanding of most branches of Physics and is fundamental to Engineering and Science. Because of its importance it is usual for motion and mechanics to be the first subject covered in any elementary course in physics.
