L103 Unit 2 Chapter 5 Syntax The arrangement of word into phrases and sentences o Linear arrangement, linear order Set arrangement As in syntax o Set order o Order in sentence based on grammatical rules o Hierarchical arrangement, hierarchical structure based on intended meaning of the sentence o Constituency Constituent - The thing being modified? Syntax is about word order and phrase structure o Not meaning A grammatical sentence Doesn’t have to make sense or mean anything If English word order (subj-verb-obj) allows the sentence then it is syntactically well-formed sentence. Word order o Relatively fixed English, Spanish, etc. o Relatively free German, Russian, etc.
