Solutions to MAM1000W class test 5 – 2010 Imaad Isaacs – imaad@imaad.info SOLUTIONS TO MAM1000W CLASS TEST 5 OF 2010 – PART IMAAD ISAACS – ISCIMA002 QUESTION 1 We use the properties of the function in order to determine what the equation for this function will be: a) considering the zeros (x-intercepts) x=3 and x=-1 when f(x)=0 (i.e. when the numerator equals zero) b) considering the vertical asymptotes x=4 and x=1 these occur when f(x) does not exist (denominator equals zero) properties (a) and (b) give us an equation of: c) if we consider the third property by evaluating the limit we obtain that the horizontal asymptote occurs at y=1, this is not what we want. We therefore need to multiply the function by a factor of 4 to obtain a function that satisfies this.
