Ligand-gated ion channel o Ion channel controls movement of ions across a membrane o The channel is open/closed (gated) by extracellular signal molecules which bind to the ion channel Summary o Cell signaling involves an extracellular first messenger activating a receptor o The activated receptor initiates a signaling cascade which amplifies the signal o Second messengers (cAMP and calcium) activate intracellular components o Protein kinase transfers phosphate from ATP to specifically targeted amino acids in the protein which is to be turned on or off The target is covalently modified o Protein phosphatases reverse this by removing the phosphate from the target o Cells have multiple types of receptors Response of the cell to the first messengers depends on the summation of all the incoming inputs Ex., inhibitory and stimulatory receptors o First messengers can bind to different types of receptors
