Abstract: The purpose of this lab is to apply Newton’s laws of motion to two different mechanical systems. This experiment will help to visualize these forces acting within the systems. Introduction: The laboratory group rolled the cart down the low friction incline while allowing the computer to measure the time that it took for the cart to pass through the photogate. A software program then calculated the velocity and acceleration of the cart for successive runs with an increasing angle of the incline. The second part of the experiment involved the use of a pulley system with variable masses, while the computer recorded the time that it took for the system to reach an extreme length, where one mass is at the top of the pulley and the other is at the maximum displacement allowed by the length constraints of the system.
