Loraine Turkenburg PL 380Q May 3 , 2010 Final Could it ever be possible for humans to one day construct a machine that understands the sentences it hears and utters ? I do not believe that it is possible for humans to one day construct a machine that understands the sentences it hears and utters . I do believe that a machine can be constructed that is able to read sentences and give appropriate responses , but I do not think the machine would truly understand what is going on . I believe that the machine would be programmed to give responses to all types of questions , or even responses in a conversation . But again , that does not mean that the machine would understand what it is receiving , or the responses it is giving. John Searle challenges us to think that if a human operator is able to control the machine , that the operator must also understand Chinese. I disagree with Searle , I do not believe that this is true . Just because someone is able to follow the instructions of a program does not mean that they truly understand what is going on . For example , I am able to sit down and follow the instructions on a computer that shows me how to fix a problem the computer is having internally . I do not understand the problem , but I am

able to fix it due to the instructions that are given to me . Therefore , just because I am able to follow instructions does not automatically imply that I understand what is really going on inside my computer . The same applies to the operator that is running the machine . This leads me to agree with Searle ’s conclusion when he says that if the operator is just following a program and does not understand Chinese , than the same is applied to the machine . The machine is also just following a program and does not understand Chinese . Searle also says that if the machine does not truly understand Chinese
