OPTI 201R Fall 2010 30-1 9.2 Field Stop The field stop: ! is an aperture (i.e. a real, physical opening). ! is located at a real image somewhere in the optical system (typically at the image or object). ! can be any shape (typically round, square, or rectangular). ! 35mm film in the image plane of a camera acts as the field stop: the image size is the size of the light-sensitive region of the emulsion, 26mm x 24mm. ! the edges of the CCD or CMOS chip in a digital camera act as the field stop: typical sizes of CCD chips range from 2.3mm x 1.7mm ("1/6") to 18mm x 13.5mm ("4/3") (and larger!!) ! SONY ( IMX045PQ ) 5M cell-phone chip (5.85mm x 4.30mm) ! SONY ( IMX060PQ ) 12M cell-phone chip (7.60mm x 5.80mm) ! limits the size and shape of the image. ! does NOT limit or change the image brightness (the aperture stop does).
