Essay 1: Textual Analysis (20%) ENGL 101/107, Sections 134/04, Gillio, Spring 2008 Assignment Goals Analysis—use narrative and/or rhetorical analytical tools to arrive at and support different  interpretations of one text. Summary—provide an objective, accurate, and concise summary of the text focusing on details that  contribute to the thesis. Thesis Statement—write a  D ebatable,  M anageable, and  V ivid claim regarding how one text holds  different meanings for different readers. Process Writing—active use of each stage of the process and incorporation of ideas discussed during  class and in the workshop to improve the final content and structure of your essay. Text Choices:  The Promise Coffee; Kidnapped by Syrian Hospitality; Magic Carpet Ride; Gridlocked  Tehran at Gunpoint; or Repatriation and Regret (additional ENGL 101 text). The Task Use one  of the texts we’ve discussed in this unit to examine different interpretations that are possible of  this text.  Start by providing a short, objective summary of the text.  Next, interpret  the text in two  different ways, for example: first the way your best friend would read it and then the way a  parent or mentor would read it.  Finally, describe the variations in textual interpretation.  For
