CDE 430: Motor Development lectures Physical Growth Over the first 2 years of a human’s life, growth occurs at a rapid pace! Principles of Development Cephalocaudal (head before body-- head grows to mature size earliest) & Proximo-distal (centered on body to developing limbs). Independent systems: Systems have different rates of developing: EX: by age two: nervous system growth, ½ of its adult status, physical growth, 1/3 of adult status, sexual characteristics have hardly developed. Interplay between norms and individual differences: There is an “average” time that things happen. Different individuals may follow different developmental rates but eventually reach the same level or Physical Growth Different body systems mature at different rates For instance, the nervous system is highly developed during infancy.
