Which of the competing theories that we have studied so far (realism, liberalism, Marxism, constructivism, feminism) best describes each candidate’s approach to international relations? Edwards, mostly liberal but with some realist tendencies, McCain, the same. Is there additional information that is needed before we can make such a call? Obviously, it would be necessary to see what each would actually do in any given situation… To give an accurate analysis they would both have to have both already been president. EDWARDS REALIST LIBERAL Believes in “military strength… as a means to protect a system of laws and institutions”. In favour of leaving troops in the Middle East after pullout, (e.g. “the United States must retain sufficient forces in the region”) Acknowledges the necessity of military force in facing the “challenges of the new century”. Talks about US’ need to have “smart power”… “We need to place ‘smart power’ at the center of our national
