Physics 2010 – Spring 2010 Recitation Assignment 5 NAME ________________________ Section Day (circle): M Tu W Th F Section Time: 8a 10a 12p 2p 4p TA Name:____________________ Instructions: work in groups of 3 to 4. This week's assignment will focus on work and energy. (Ch. 6) 1. A block is moving on a frictionless, horizontal table. Assume it is moving to the left. a) A hand exerts a constant horizontal force on the block. Suppose the work done on the block by the hand is positive . Draw arrows showing the direction of the displacement of the block during a short time interval, and the direction of the force on the block. Explain briefly how you chose the direction of the force on the block. b) Is the block speeding up, slowing down or moving with constant speed? Why? c) A hand again exerts a constant horizontal force on the block, but this time the work done on the block by the hand is negative . Draw arrows showing both the direction of the displacement of the block, and the direction of the force on the block. Again explain briefly how you chose the direction of the force on the block. d)
