Guanosine tetraphosphate is synthesized by the RelA protein when E. coli is being starved of nutrients. The Guanosine tetraphosphate will then inhibit rRNA and tRNA synthesis by binding to RNA polymerase and preventing initiation of transcription. However, the guanosine tetraphosphate will activate biosynthetic operons for amino acids accounting for the upshift in the biosynthesis of amino acids and the downshift in ribosomal RNA synthesis.
