AEM 2100 Name __________________ Spring 2010 Section _________________ Homework 10 This homework is not to be handed in. The answer key will be posted on the AEM 210 Web page. 1.) From your textbook, page 352, #9.10 (Older version, page 310, #8.10). 2.) A mail-order business prides itself on its ability to fill customers' orders in 6 calendar days or less, on average. Periodically, the operations manager selects a random sample of customer orders and observes the number of days required to fill these orders. Based upon this sample information, he determines whether or not the desired standard is being met. He will assume that the average number of days to fill customers' orders is 6 or less unless the data strongly suggest otherwise. a.) Establish the appropriate null and alternative hypotheses. b.) On one occasion when a sample of 40 customers was selected, the average number of days was 6.65. It is known that the population has a standard deviation of 1.5 days. Can the operations manager conclude that his mail- order business is achieving its goal? Use a significance level of 0.025 to answer this question. c.) Calculate the p -value for this test. Interpret this value. d.) Determine the smallest significance level that would lead the operations manager to conclude that the mail-order business does not fill customers' orders in 6 calendar days or less, on average. e.) The operations manager wishes to frequently monitor the efficiency of his mail-order service (always using n = 40). Therefore, he does not wish to repeatedly calculate z-values to conduct the hypothesis tests.
