STAT 4714: Probability and Statistics for Electrical Engineers Fall 2010 Instructor: Dr. Leigh Harrell Williams E-mail: leighh@vt.edu Office: 401-C Hutcheson Hall Office Hours: Monday and Wednesday 1:30 – 2:30pm, Tuesday and Thursday 2 - 3 pm Note: I will not be able to check email or answer phone calls during office hours if there are students in the office. Course Description: Introduction to the concepts of probability, random variables, estimation, hypothesis testing, regression, and analysis of variance with emphasis on application in electrical engineering. Prerequisite: MATH 2224 NOTE: Only one of the courses {4105, 4604, 4705, 4714} or may be taken for credit. Textbook: Introduction to Probability and Statistics , Fourth Edition, by J. Susan Milton and Jesse C. Arnold. The bookstore carries the most recent edition. You may purchase an older edition from an alternate source if you prefer as homework questions are not assigned from the text. SECTIONS TO BE COVERED: 1.1-1.3, 2.1-2.4, 3.1-3.5, 3.7-3.8, 4.1-4.4, 4.6-4.7, 5.1-5.4, 6.1-6.3, 7.1-7.4, 8.1-8.6, 9.1, 10.1-10.5, 11.1-11.4, 11.6, 13.1, 16.1-16.2, and additional material (not in book) on Bayesian estimation, random processes, autocorrelation, and crosscorrelation. ***Documentation of Excused Absences:
