Usman Ansari 07/23/2010 E316K – Assignment 1 Part A: Identification 1.) The author of this quote is Alvar Nunez Cabeza de Vaca from ‘The Narrative of Alvar Nunez Cabeza de Vaca’. Cabeza de Vaca has analyzed the Indians habits and ways over the period of time he has been with them and has found that they have no sense of time, and no way of telling by observing the moon or sun either. But they must know the differences in seasons, for this is the way they obtain their fruits, fish, and other sources of food to survive. Sure enough, the Indians knew when and where to expect these foods, and they were able to supply these foods to Cabeza de Vaca and his men in return for the healings performed upon the Indians. 2.) The author of this quote is unknown. It is a quote of the fall of the Aztec civilization from a native Aztec source from ‘Broken Spears: The Aztec Account of the Conquest of Mexico’. When the ‘mysterious people’, or the Spanish, arrived on the Aztec empire, Montezuma sent messengers to take a descriptive account of these people with every little detail and create portraits of them so he could see what they look like. When the messengers arrived back and explained that these people wore and carried nothing but iron, sat on deers as tall as the roof of a house, owned cannons that could split a mountain in half, and had dogs that were tireless and very powerful, Montezuma was terrified and feared the overtaking of his empire. The description of the sweet tasting human food scared him the most. This showed that the Spanish had much stronger armor, weapons, firepower, and traveling methods. 3.) The author of this quote is Captain John Smith from ‘A Description of New England’. John Smith is comparing the opportunities and lifestyles of England and New England. He sees New England as a land in which a man and his family can be free to prosper on their own, owing nothing to anyone but themselves. People could have freedom and liberty in New England which they could not enjoy in England. In England their would be losses and charges, but in New England one could start fresh from nothing and work for his own wealth. 4.)
