SUBJECT DESCRIPTION ___________________________________________________________________________ Subject Title : Numerical Methods for Product Analysis ME 4 906 Instructor : Dr. G. P. Zheng, Department of Mechanical Engineering, Hong Kong PolyU. (E-mail): mmzheng@polyu.edu.hk , (Tel): 27666660 Objectives (Part II of the course): At the end of this course, students are expected to be able to (1) Analyze the order of accuracy of a finite difference scheme. (2) Understand the elliptic and parabolic boundary value problems for product analysis. (3) Understand the basics of finite element method and use a software package. This course emphasizes the hands-on experience, and Matlab is used throughout the course. Heat transfer will serve as the basic example while other types of equations/physical phenomena are touched upon slightly. Continuous assessment consists of homework assignment and test (30% of total marks). Plagiarism is strictly forbidden. Late submissions are not entertained.
