Chapter 10 Photosynthesis- chloroplasts capturing light and converting that light to chemical energy stored in sugar and other organic molecules Autotrophs- self-feeders, sustaining life without eating other organisms; produce organic molecules from CO 2 and other inorganics a. Ultimate sources of organic compounds for nonautotrophic organisms b. For this reason, named producers c. Plants are photo autotrophs, deriving sources from water, minerals, inorganic compounds and light energy d. Photoautotrophs include plants, multicellular algae, unicellular protest, cyanobacteria and purple sulfur bacteria Heterotrophs- other-feeders, sustaining life by feeding off others that have organic compounds; dependent on autotrophs a. Commonly known as consumers b. Known to feed off decaying or dead organisms (i.e. fungi, vultures?) Mesophyll- tissue in interior of leaf where chloroplasts are mainly found (size relationship: mesophyll chloroplast chlorophyll) Chloroplasts- sites of photosynthesis in plants; green color is from chlorophyll within chloroplast Chlorophyll- absorbs light energy from sun drives synthesis of organic substances within chloroplast Stomata- “mouth” where CO 2 enters and O 2 exits into and from plant, respectively Veins- where plant absorbs water through; is nonphotosynthetic , similar to other parts that deliver sugar within plant Stroma- dense fluid within chloroplast that is enclosed by envelope of two membranes Thylakoids- system of interconnected membranous sacs, segregating stroma from thylakoid space ; the “poker chip” Granum- stacked columns of thylakoids; “the stack of poker chips;” (size relationship: chloroplast granum thylakoid) Photosynthetic Prokaryotes- lack chloroplasts but have photosynthetic membranes from infolded regions that function like thylakoids Photosynthetic Equation- 6CO 2 + 12H 2 O + Light Energy 3-Carbon Sugar + 6O 2 + 6H 2 O; glucose is not actual sugar made here Discovery of Photosynthetic Mechanism- O 2 given off by plants is derived from H 2 O not CO 2 Van Niel- used Sulfur bacteria and used heavy isotope ( 18 O) as tracer to follow fate of O 2 in photosynthesis (uses simplified formula) a. Experiment 1: CO 2 + 2H 2 O [CH 2 O] + H 2 O + O 2 ; with O from Water to O in Oxygen; brackets for simplified sugar
