ME 375 HOMEWORK #2 Spring 2009 Out: January 21, 2009 Due: January 28, 2009 (at the beginning of class) PROBLEM 1: (40%) An engine nacelle of mass M e is shown attached to an aircraft wing in the figure below. The engine is attached through a mount with a height H m , cross-sectional area A m , and material modulus E m . Assume that the mount and wing contain much less mass than the engine. The wing has length L w , modulus E w , and cross-sectional area moment of inertia, I w . The engine is attached to the wing a distance L w /4 from the fuselage. Gravity can be ignored and the fuselage can be treated like a fixed support. (a) Draw a schematic diagram of the system using lumped parameters to model the vertical translational dynamic behavior of the engine as it vibrates on the wing, which also bends. (b) Determine expressions for the vertical stiffnesses provided by the (1) engine mount and (2) wing. Hint:
