Psychology – observation, the scientific study of the abc’s Affect- emotions Behavior Cognition – thinking Empiricism – truth can only be found through objectively quantifiable observation -Observation – see to believe, study of people by watching them -Quantifiable – can be turned into a number, observation that can be measured -Objectively – everyone agrees 3 General Principles of Science 1 st Princ. – we only accept explanations that can successfully predict behavior 2 nd Princ. – Science requires confirmation of finding -somebody else can do same research and replicate findings 3 rd Princ. – Science is self correcting and it changes Sample – subgroup of the population - everyone must be from the pop. - these are the people we observe and measure Statistic – Descriptive number computed on a sample - any descriptive number based on a sample Parameter – any descriptive number based on judging a population - we used statistics to estimate parameters Sampling Error
