Biology of Cancer and Aids 04/10/2007 17:22:00 Lecture 1: What is the greatest threat to life expectancy? o Obesity What is the leading cause of death worldwide in both men and women? o Lung cancer *What are some key roles that are played in an increased life expectancy? o Public health o Higher living standards *Why is there an increase in life expectancy? o Because people are living longer, meaning that the older people are  more susceptible to contract diseases *Some Reasons for Increased Life Expectancy: o Vaccination o Antibiotics o Improved sanitation o Improved hygiene o Better health care o Decreased Infant mortality rate o Decrease in unhealthy behaviors o Nutrition Lecture 2:

*Types of Diseases: o Environmental (90%) o Genetic (10%) o Infectious What type is cancer? o All three *Who is Louis Pasteur? o He is the man who disproved spontaneous generation once and for all *What is the Cell theory? o All living things are made up of cells o It is structural and functional o Comes from pre-existing cells by division o Contains hereditary information which travels from cell to cell during  cell division o All are basically the same in chemical composition o All energy flow (metabolic and biochemistry) of life occurs within the  cells What is the germ theory? o It proves that microorganisms are the cause of diseases Describe Koch’s Postulates: o First, the suspected pathogen must always be found in the diseased  individual, but absent in the healthy o The pathogen must be isolated from the diseased individual and grown  in a pure culture o The pathogen from the pure cultures must cause the disease when  inoculated into a healthy susceptible host

o The same pathogen must be re-isolated from the host that was  inculcated with the pure culture. o Viruses not taken into consideration o If a certain agent is causing a specific disease What is the leading cause of death in the U.S.? o Heart Disease Lecture 3: What two characteristic is common with all cancer cells? o An uncontrolled growth of cells o The ability to invade and damage normal tissue either locally or at  distant sites in the body *What is cancer development? o The body is made up of hundreds of different types of cells, which  behave differently o Same genetic information (DNA) but performs completely separate  roles o The life of each cell is mapped out in advanced by coded instructions  (genes) in its nucleus o When cells relating to cell multiplication and dying are wrong, the cell  may start dividing uncontrollably, and not die when it should *How does cancer develop? o
