Professional Knowledge Professional Knowledge Impacts Careers The American Federation of Teachers (AFT) was established in 1916. In its expanded form it represents teachers, paraprofessionals, local, state and federal employees among others. It was founded to represent these people in the areas of economics, social and professional interest of teachers. The AFT has elected officials and meets every two years as part of it governmental policies (AFT). Contribution Belonging to an association provides many benefits to its members. In the field of education an association provides a voice in government as they lobby for teacher fair treatment. Additionally the association provides legal help if there is a problem with the school district or parents. Once of the best contributions is the wealth of knowledge provided for professional development. Professional development is defined as the continuous improvement of skills.
