THE COMPANY The company’s business plan being analyzed is Nucor Corporation. Nucor Corporation is a steel production company that, in the past, has had tremendous success. “At the end of 2006, Nucor was solely entrenched as the second largest steel producer in North America based on total production… [and]… was the most profitable steel producer in North America in both 2005 and 2006.” (C-113). The company—with its visionary practices of high employee productivity, good employee relations, a technically superior work environment, good quality control, a cost-conscious corporate culture (which included saving money by having cost- effective management), and finally (and most importantly, perhaps) the low-cost production of steel—has shown to be a fierce domestic competitor in the steel industry in the U.S. Nucor needs to compete in the domestic and global markets in the steel industry. This company also has a basically weak managerial hierarchy and human resources system. Nucor’s four-fold strategy is riddled with dilemmas all unique unto itself. Nucor must address policy issues within its operations. Workforce compensation practices are excessive. Finally, common-sense issues, like pricing and marketing, and the actual production logistics of how steel is made must be evaluated if Nucor is expected to remain not only a vital competitor but a leader in the steel industry in the U.S. and abroad. SWOT • Strengths are that Nucor is starting out from this point as a viable company which is sensitive to its workers’ needs, for the most part, in the area of compensation.
