Treemonisha - Review Treemonisha is a foundling who was discovered under a tree in 1866 by her adoptive mother Monisha, hence her name. Monisha and her husband Ned have been employed by a white family who have provided Treemonisha with a formal education. When the opera begins Treemonisha is 18. The plantation community where she lives is deep in the Arkansas woods and is under the influence of Zodzetrick, a conjurer/witch doctor, who profits from the superstition of the residents. Zodzetrick is trying to get Monisha to buy a bag of good luck charms, but she is dissuaded from doing so by Ned and Treemonisha. The young Remus, who Treemonisha has taught to read and write, tells the conjurer that one day his powers will be overcome by the influence of Treemonisha's educated approach on the community. As a result of this Zodzetrick and his side-kick Luddud kidnap Treemonisha and haul her off into the forest. The villagers hear of this and a band of men, including Remus set off to rescue her. They do so, also capturing the conjurer
