Exam 1 Review Chapter 1: Themes in the Study of Life Biological Hierarchy: simple to complex (atoms small to large molecules cells multicellular organisms, etc.) Know the major themes of biology and what these mean Emergent properties: new properties emerge as the levels of organization increase Metabolism: provide energy for cellular processes; heterotroph/autotroph Importance of how structure relates to function Cell basic unit of life; prokaryotic v. eukaryotic Presence of informational molecules: DNA RNA proteins Biological systems are regulated (feedback mechanisms) – allows organism to maintain homeostasis Populations can evolve: Darwin’s theory (descent with modification), adaptations, natural selection (mechanism of evolution) Evidence for evolution: fossils, artificial selection, presence of homologies, geology, etc. Natural selection: 4 aspects of natural selection (variation, overproduction, differential reproductive success, struggle for existence). Know what these mean.
