Earthquakes earthquake- sudden release of energy from a sudden movement on the fault causing the ground to shake hazards: from ground shaking (except tsunami- causes by movement of the fault) 1) buildings collapse 2) debris rains down 3) highways and structures collapse 4) water and gas main break causing fires 5) landslides 6) subsidence 7) ground motion (new topography) 8) tsunamis how do we measure the size of an earthquake? Intensity: Mercalli Intensity Scale o Based on what is experienced by people and buildings during earthquake o Scale goes from I – XII Moment Magnitude o Measure of amount of energy released o One value for each EQ o Seismometer- measures ground motion o Seismogram- wiggle trace o Magnitude- uses amplitude of ground motion to estimate energy release

Unformatted text preview: o Logarithm #: M6 has 10x the ground motion amplitude of M5 M7 has 100 times a M5 Haiti: M7 Chile: M8.8 o Magnitude is a function of: the length of the rupture (how much of the fault breaks) how much the fault moves (the slip ) how strong the fault is (how much friction is there) elastic limit- breaks and releases energy where do we get the biggest earthquakes, and why? At convergent plate boundaries (subduction zones) Biggest earthquake ever recorded: Chile- 1960- M9.5 Most deadly earthquakes? Convergent plate boundaries (continental collisions)...
