Landslides - mass wasting, “creep”, rock fall, avalanches - blame it on gravity movement of material downslope by gravity Mechanics of mass movements - get mass movement when driving force exceeds the resisting force - increase the effect of gravity (driving force) by: adding mass increasing slope - decrease resistance by: remove friction (water) remove support at base of slope reduce cohesion in material (water) o weathering of material o burrowing of animals and plants - sometimes need a triggering mechanism earthquakes significant rainfall broken pipes explosions Weathering - breakdown of rocks by interaction with the atmosphere, hydrosphere, and biosphere - physical weathering (aka mechanical weathering)

size reduction i.e. sand-blasting, ice wedging - chemical weathering breakdown by chemical agents (by oxygen, water, acid rain)
